Why is the binding machine 'Intelligent'?

Where all other binding machines are very 'hands on', the Intelligent Binding Machine works automatically. You do not even have to press a start button.

How does the Intelligent binding machine work?

All you do is place the document into the one-piece binding cover and place the cover in the binding machine. The binding machine senses the document and turns the machine on automatically, then turns itself off a few moments later when completed. It’s so easy and fast.

How many pages can I bind?

You can bind from as little as 1 page up to 190 pages, all automatically. It is just as easy to bind 220 pages as it is to bind 1 page, and it takes the same amount of time.

Can I bind more than one document at a time?

Yes, you can bind up to 3 documents at a time, depending on the thickness of each cover. This saves you a lot of time when doing a large binding job.

How strong is the bound document?

The covers are specially designed to give your document a solid, permanent bind, every time.

How easy is it to add or delete pages from a previously bound document?

This is one of the amazing features of the new binding machine. Let’s say you have a 100 page document and you want to change page 50. With most binding machines you would have to take the document apart and virtually start all over again. With the Intelligent Binding machine all you do is place the document back in the Intelligent binding machine and after a minute, simply remove page 50 and place the new page in the same position. You no longer have to take the document apart. We make binding easy.

What does the bound document look like?

It is modern looking and looks just like a professionally bound book, with a Clear front cover, a Black hard back cover and a leather spine.

If I have a Unibind binding machine can I use your covers?

You can only use steel spine covers on the Unibind binding machines.

Can I trade my Unibind binding machine in for the new Intelligent Binding Machine.

Yes, we will give you a $200 trade in for your old Unibind binding machine. This means that you will pay only $97 for the new Intelligent Binding machine.

How easy is the bound document to file?

Unlike other binders that have a spiral spine that takes up a lot of room and makes filing difficult, the new binding cover is a slim bound book, making it easy to place in a file.

Will the book become damaged if its paper is put under the welding bar?

No, you will not have any damage to any paper that comes in contact with the welding bar. The machine has a temperature sensor that will not allow it to heat to a temperature that would damage any paper. The machine is only at this temperature during the welding cycle. At the end of each cycle, the welding bar is actually decreasing in temperature.

Do I have to turn the Colibri machine off when I’m not using it?

No, the machine is only active when both handles are pressed. The machine is not heating when the handles are in the up position.

Can I move the machine easily?

Yes, the machine only weighs 8kgs and is very portable. We even offer a custom made carrying case with wheels if you are going to be travelling with your system.

What does the number on the LCD mean?

The number represents the total number of cuts the system has made.

Why do I have to wait until the LCD says finished?

You need to allow the welding bar time to heat the Polyethylene (plastic material) to form a proper seal. Waiting until the LCD says “Finished” ensures that the plastic material has had adequate time to cool and seal.

What if I don’t wait until the LCD says finished?

The plastic material may not weld or seal completely and therefore will not be as strong.

Will children get hurt if they use the Pocket or Leonardo covering machine?

No, the system is safe for children to use, however we do recommend supervision for children under the age of 12.

How does the system actually cut the covers?

Two rollers are used to gently “pull” the plastic material after the heat welds it. There are no blades or other sharp objects used in the system.

Can I cover all books of all sizes with the Colibri Machine?

Our three sizes of covers will fit on 98% of all books.

What size covers do I need to buy?

You can choose from three sizes of Colibri covers. Mini, Standard, and Big. But remember that the Leonardo does not take books that require a cutting width greater than 500mm, so it will only accept Mini and standard covers. The Pocket will accept all three sizes. The normal distribution of size is the following: 10% Mini, 80% Standard and 10% Big.

How long will Colibri covers last?

The shelf life of the material is 100 years or more*. The covers are expected to double the life of a book if it is covered at its purchase. If the book has been used significantly, the Colibri cover will still add 30-50% to the life of the book.

Do I need Tape?

No tape, glue or adhesives are needed.

Why do I have to start with the back cover first?

Inserting the back cover first helps to ensure the cover height is correct and square because the back of cover has a slightly deeper pocket than the front of the cover.

Prepare the document you would like to bind

Choose the appropriate sized iQ Cover (based on how many pages in your document)

Step 4.

Turn on the Binding Machine (the light turns green)

 

Step 5.

Turn the Rotary Switch on the front of the machine to correspond with the cover you are using.

Step 6.

Place your iQ Cover into the Binding Machine (The light turns red)

 

Step 7.

Wait for the Heating Cycle to finish (The buzzer sounds, light turns green and the Binding Machine stops heating automatically)

 

Step 8.

Lift your iQ Cover out of the Binding Machine and place it on the cooling clamp.
(Making sure the weight is firmly pushing against the spine of the cover)

Step 9.
Leave it to cool for 2 minutes

WARNING: Wait until the spine has completely cooled before use
